September 21, 2024 – The second installment of the Career Orientation Day, themed "Empowering Futures: Making Informed Decisions," took place at V and G National High School, focusing on highly vulnerable adolescent girls. This event is part of the Life Skills Plus project under the Girls Got This initiative, aimed at helping the project participants make informed career choices.
Following a successful first session at Northern Tacloban City National High School with 42 attendees on September 7, this recent gathering attracted 38 participants from five partner schools: Leyte National High School, Tacloban City Night High School, Antonio Balmes National High School, Sagkahan National High School, and V and G National High School.
Participants were inspired by guest speakers who shared insights into the current job market and their personal career journeys. Ms. Cherry Blanca A. Yu, Career Guidance and Employment Coaching Officer of the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Tacloban, highlighted PESO’s services and the resources available for job seekers. She emphasized understanding labor market demands and accessing support for successful job searches.
The event also featured a dynamic talk show segment with Ms. Danika Christyn Astilla, a researcher and writer, and Atty. Ma. Donna Erika Navarro, a lawyer and educator. They shared their experiences and offered practical advice to the girls for navigating career paths, such as not being scared to showcase their skills and to explore new opportunities, as endless possibilities await them.
After the talk show, the girls had the opportunity to share their thoughts on the guest speakers’ journeys in navigating their career paths. One participant, Gemima, a senior high school student at V and G National High School, expressed that she feels motivated after listening to the talk and aspires to become a lawyer in the future.
The session wrapped up with the distribution of Move for Equity packs to the girls who hadn’t yet received theirs, marking the third round of this initiative. The girls received valuable resources to support their education and personal hygiene needs.
This event, funded by the Consuelo Foundation, reflects a shared commitment to empowering young women with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their careers.
