On August 15, 2026, 60 young people gathered at the Dulag Dream Academy in Barangay Rawis, Dulag, Leyte, to mark International Youth Day through the Beyond Our Differences: International Youth Day Festival 2026.

Guided by the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” the festival brought together 54 players and six student leaders from Rawis Elementary School, Dulag National High School, and Cabacungan National High School.

While participants came from different schools, age groups, and experiences, the festival created a shared space for them to strengthen leadership, teamwork, and communication while recognizing the aspirations that connect them. Participants worked in mixed teams throughout the event, encouraging them to engage with young people beyond their usual peer groups and learn how cooperation, listening, and mutual respect contribute to achieving common goals.

Through a series of team challenges, participants put these skills into practice. The Common Aspirations Relay encouraged them to reflect on their personal hopes and the changes they want to see in their communities, from completing their education and supporting their families to protecting the environment, promoting equality, and creating opportunities for other young people. Other activities challenged teams to communicate effectively, share responsibilities, solve problems together, and ensure that every member could participate.

These experiences helped turn the International Youth Day theme into something participants could experience firsthand. Rather than focusing on what made them different, young people were encouraged to recognize what they could learn from one another and what they could achieve by working together.

For Merill L. Onida, Supreme Secondary Learner Government President of Cabacungan National High School, the activity reinforced the importance of communication, listening, and accepting differences as part of youth leadership.

“As young people and as leaders, we need to communicate well and listen to the ideas of others. We may have differences, but despite these, we can still be united if we accept one another and remain open to what others can contribute.”

The festival also encouraged participants to reflect on their shared sense of responsibility and the power of working together. Through the Youth Vision Poster Making Challenge, teams expressed their ideas on youth leadership, unity, community improvement, and their aspirations for the future, reinforcing that young people are not only participants in community development but also voices capable of helping shape it.

For FundLife, creating meaningful opportunities for youth participation is an important part of building stronger and more inclusive communities. When young people have safe spaces to communicate, collaborate, and lead, they can develop the confidence and skills to take positive action in the places where they live and learn.

Beyond Our Differences demonstrated that young people do not need to share the same experiences to share the same aspirations. By bringing 60 young people together across differences, International Youth Day became an opportunity to build connections, strengthen youth leadership, and show what becomes possible when young people are given the space to listen, participate, and work toward a common future.
